Departmental Strategic Planning

Most companies have a strategic plan for their business. But how many department heads have strategic plans for their department that are aligned with the overall business strategy?

Whether a department is on the main value chain such as Marketing, Sales, and Product Development or plays a supporting role such as Human Resources, Finance, and IT, they either contribute to the company’s overall performance or they are a drag on it. The only way to make sure that a department is optimizing its contribution to the business is to systematically analyze the contribution the department can make and then to develop a departmental strategic plan that aligns with the overall business plans.

In addition to the strategic influences on an entire business, departments are subject to their own strategic influences such as

  • Evolving best practices and experience across many companies

  • Changing technology

  • Changing talent requirements

  • Aging workforce

A Departmental Strategic Plan should answer the following questions:

  • What could be our best contribution to the business?

  • What should our departmental business model look like?

  • What practices should we be following?

  • What workload will we be facing over the next few years?

  • What should our talent pool, our Human Capital, look like?

  • What are our current capabilities, and where are the important gaps?

  • How do we get there from here, at what cost, and what is the business case for moving forward?

Our systematic approach to Departmental Strategic Planning is outlined in the flowchart below.
